How hair coloring works?

Prominent ways of hair coloring:

1) Temporary hair coloring:
In temporary hair coloring pigment molecules are large in size and do not enter in the cuticle of hair. They only coat the hair which can be removed by shampooing. Products like shampoo, gels sprays etc contains temporary hair color.

2) Demi-permanent hair color
In this pigment molecules are small in size that penetrate in cuticle or outer layer and reaches to the cotex of hair.the original hair color is not effected by semi-permanent color. Chemicals like ammonia and peroxide are not used. It has no work to do with natural pigment of hair and can be easily removed from hair shaft after shampooing 4,5 times hair retains its original hair color thereafter.

3) Semi-permanent hair color
Pre color molecules reach the cortex from the cuticle of hair where they form group resulting in medium sized color molecules. They are large in size so they need more shampooing for the removal of hair color as compared to semi-permanent hair color. Ammonia is not used that is why original pigment cannot be lightened and it retains its natural state. Peroxide is used in this form of coloring.

4) Permanent hair coloring
In permanent hair coloring molecules reach the cortex where they react and attain large size. These molecules cannot be removed by shampooing. Ammonia as well as peroxide is used in permanent hair coloring. In this natural pigment molecules is lightened which leaves new base for the desired permanent hair color. Finally your hair is left with the mixture of original hair pigment and the shade of color applied. So we can say that hair color may appear different on every individual.

Hair coloringHerbs and dyes were used for hair coloring in the starting of 1900’s first safe commercial hair coloring was invented by french chemist EUGENE in year 1909. His creation was from a chemical named “paraphenylenediamine” and found a french hair dye company. A year later this company was named as LOREAL which is more popular name.

Chemicals used in hair coloring:
1) Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is used in different forms and quantities depending upon the desired color .as much as the developer is used in hair color the removal of sulfur from hair is also increases. It results in loss of weight and hair hard textured.

2) Ammonia
This alkaline acts as catalyst and is responsible for hair lightening .When hair color which is treated with peroxide comes in contact with ammonia it separates the cuticle by which hair color reaches to the cortex. Along with this, alcohol in various types is used which is also for drying hair and is mixed in mostly all hair colors.

Results of hair color:
After coloring sometimes we do not get the desired hair color. This mostly happens because of hair dyes used at home. Colorists are efficient enough to know what color they will get from dye. If the results is not the same as was expected earlier then they use another products to get the desired color.
